How to Beat the Heat

By Nicy B.

Besides the regular baths, cold showers, multiple fans, AC, going underneath the shade, and going to the pool- here are ten ways to beat the heat!

1. Always make sure you're staying hydrated. If you're not much of a water drinker, try peppermint tea to keep you cool, or add frozen fruit to your water to make fruit-infused water.

2. Get a plastic bowl and add water to it- let it freeze in your freezer, then place it in front of your fan for a more effective cooling system if your AC isn't working.

3. Consider getting a Window Mount AC; easy to install and cheaper than running your AC unit. It also cools up a room super quickly.

4. During the day, close your curtains and windows to provide shade inside your place.

5. Wear clothes appropriate for summer wear, such as lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing. It will allow air to circulate and reflect the light and heat. Dark colors trap the heat from the sun, which causes you to sweat more.

6. Avoid synthetic fibers such as polyester and nylon because they are not breathable during the hot summer; this also includes polyester blends. Instead, opt for cotton clothes, the most affordable and accessible type of clothing; other good options would be linen, silk, and chambray.

7. Wash your hands and face with cool water, and don't forget your wrist too! It makes you feel refreshed. You can even put ice on your wrist, chest, neck, and temples.

8. Remove the comforter from your bedding and replace it with a light blanket such as bamboo or linen. Consider having a winter blanket stored and a summer blanket to keep your bed feeling cool and refreshing.

9. Plants in your living can also cool down your home, such as Snake Plant, Aloe Plant, Rubber Plant, and Chinese Evergreens. Keep in mind your pets and what's safe around them.

10. You are what you eat. Try drinking coconut water; It rehydrates you because of the additional vitamins, minerals, and electrolytes in coconut water. Fruits and vegetables that would be best for consumption to cool down would be watermelon, bananas, oranges, cumbers, strawberries, salad, celery, and cauliflowers.
